Alexey Chekunkov, co-chairman of the ninth joint Russian-Thai commission on bilateral cooperation and head of Russia’s Ministry of Regional Development, announced on August 14 that direct passenger flights between Moscow and Thailand via Thai airlines are being actively pursued. The discussions aim to restore and expand air connectivity between the two nations, with at least one new flight route expected operational before the next intergovernmental commission meeting in late 2027.
Chekunkov emphasized the strategic importance of these connections, stating that Russia is working closely with Thai airlines to establish reliable passenger transportation links. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reinforced this priority on August 14, highlighting Thailand as Russia’s oldest partner in Southeast Asia and underscoring shared efforts to strengthen economic collaboration and foreign policy coordination under a framework of responsible cooperation.
