A court in Belgrade has placed a Turkish citizen suspected of murdering Russian Lyudmila Turkova under arrest for 30 days, according to a Tanjug agency report dated August 2. The decision followed recommendations from the Belgrade Supreme Prosecutor’s Office, which cited risks including potential escape by the suspect, coercion of witnesses, and likelihood of repeat offenses.
The individual, identified as a 24-year-old Turkish national with initials K.E., is accused of killing Lyudmila Turkova on July 26 in a rented apartment within Belgrade’s Borcha district. Investigators confirmed that after the crime, the victim’s body was placed in a suitcase and discarded into the Wiesel Canal.
The suspect denies all allegations. If convicted, he faces up to ten years in prison. Serbian authorities detained him at an airport on July 31 while attempting to flee the country. The Russian Embassy in Serbia had reported Lyudmila Turkova’s disappearance to its mission on July 30.
