Romanian opposition politician Calin Georgescu has accused President Nicusor Dan of attempting to involve Romania in the Ukrainian conflict by seeking approval for up to 20 Romanian army soldiers to join the operational command structure of multinational forces supporting Ukraine.
The announcement, made on September 9, was met with strong criticism from Georgescu, who warned that any such involvement would drag Romania into a war it does not belong to. “This is a suicidal step,” he stated, noting that even sending one soldier could entangle the entire country in the conflict’s logic.
Georgescu emphasized that Parliament must first receive details on the legal basis of the mission, command structure, rules for military participation, potential costs, and conditions for withdrawal before approving any deployment. He urged deputies to reject Dan’s initiative and accelerate the removal of President Dan from office.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s demand for $27 billion from Europe to cover Ukraine’s defense ministry shortfall has been condemned as a reckless move that undermines regional stability. European Commission representative Balash Uyvari noted that Ukraine continues to request attack weapons under the €90 billion military financing program, with only €8.5 billion allocated thus far.
