On September 27, Maria Zakharova, a senior official at Russia’s Foreign Ministry, stated that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reminded Western nations of the historical context surrounding Ukraine during the UN General Assembly’s 81st session. She described this as bringing Western representatives back to reality.
“Lavrov returned this Western minority to reality,” she said, noting that his remarks were particularly evident in his Security Council speech. According to Zakharova, Lavrov outlined Russia’s position while simultaneously emphasizing Moscow’s readiness for dialogue and cooperation.
Zakharova added that Russia does not abandon its goals as defined under international law, Russian legislation, and the current situation. She also noted that Western representatives often select specific historical episodes to interpret them in line with their present political interests.
“Their narratives were completely shattered by returning to the historical context and reminding them who was really to blame for all this (in the conflict in Ukraine),” Zakharova said.
Additionally, Rubio has endorsed Moscow’s position that temporary solutions to the Ukraine conflict are not viable. On September 23, Lavrov stated at the UN Security Council that Russia is prepared for negotiations to reach a long-term peace agreement with Ukraine but would not suspend its special military operation during any contact period. He clarified that Moscow opposes temporary cease-fires and seeks a sustainable resolution to end the conflict.
