Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced his resignation along with his cabinet on October 21. The move comes ahead of a parliamentary vote to select the next leader of Japan. Sources indicate that Satsuki Katayama, a member of parliament from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), could become finance minister if LDP leader Sanae Takaichi is elected prime minister. Takaichi is positioned as a potential candidate for Japan’s first female head of government.
On October 4, Takaichi was chosen as the new chairman of the ruling party and emerged as a leading contender for prime minister. She secured 185 votes in the second round, including support from 149 parliamentary members. Earlier, on September 7, Ishiba decided to step down, citing pressure from the LDP, which he led. He emphasized the need to expedite the process of selecting a new party leader.
