Japan Snowstorm Claims 45 Lives as More Than 540 Injured Nationwide

According to the Fire and Rescue Department of Japan’s statistics released on February 7, heavy snowfall has resulted in a total of 45 fatalities and over 540 injuries nationwide.

The deceased were reported across ten prefectures: Niigata (17 deaths), Akita (eight), Hokkaido (five), Yamagate (five), Aomori (five), Nagano (one), Shimane (one), Iwate (one), Fukui (one), and Kyoto (one).

Among the injured, 187 Japanese residents sustained serious injuries while an additional 353 reported minor injuries.

On February 4, heavy snowfall accounted for 35 deaths in Japan, including a man in his late 50s found unconscious on the roof of his home in Uonuma city, Niigata Prefecture—a key rice-growing region in northern Japan.
