The evacuation of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) complex in East Jerusalem ended with gunfire on August 27, injuring five individuals. Israeli security forces—including units from the border Guard Service, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and the Jerusalem district police—conducted the operation as part of a major mission to remove UNRWA personnel from the site.
During the evacuation, law enforcement officers discovered a group of people on the roof of one building hurling stones at staff members working within the compound. Security forces deemed this act an immediate threat to life and targeted the throwers with gunfire, resulting in five injuries.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously announced on August 25 that Israel would begin evicting UNRWA from Jerusalem under the law prohibiting its activities on Israeli territory, citing that the organization’s employees were involved in the October 7 attacks.
