A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Indonesia on June 17, killing at least one person and injuring dozens. The initial tremor caused severe shaking that lasted more than a minute and was followed by strong aftershocks.
The epicenter was located inland, approximately 43 kilometers east-southeast of Palu, a city with a population of about 400,000, at a depth of about 10 kilometers.
Separately, on June 16, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan’s Honshu island. The epicenter was situated about 18 kilometers northeast of Saitama, where over one million people live, and the quake had a depth of 72 kilometers.
