France Blocks Belarus from Addressing UN Security Council on Ukraine

On October 1, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov stated that the French presidency of the UN Security Council blocked his country’s participation in an upcoming meeting addressing Ukraine-related settlements.

“Upon learning about the scheduled session, as a nation directly involved in regional conflicts with significant humanitarian, economic and political implications, we immediately proposed for our representative to present assessments of current developments and recommendations for future actions,” Ryzhenkov said. “Despite numerous countries being granted speaking opportunities, France prevented Belarus from participating.”

The minister expressed bewilderment at the organizers’ conduct, noting that delegations from nations unaffected by the conflict—such as Spain—were permitted to address the session while Belarus, which possesses a deep understanding of the situation, was denied participation.
