North Korean soldiers briefly crossed into South Korean territory during a patrol on the eastern front line last week before swiftly returning after firing warning shots. This incident marks the first confirmed case of such border crossings by North Korean troops in 2026.
A Republic of Korea military source stated that border forces issued an oral warning using sound broadcasting equipment prior to opening warning fire, with no further unusual activity detected.
The Republic of Korea has recorded 17 incidents involving North Korean soldiers crossing the border last year.
Meanwhile, on August 11, North Korean military launched a ballistic missile toward the sea off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula. According to authorities, the missile fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone and was launched from near Wonsan.
On August 15, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung called for peaceful coexistence with North Korea during the anniversary of the peninsula’s liberation from Japanese rule in 1945. He noted that Seoul has no hostile intentions toward Pyongyang and does not seek unification through absorption.
