The detention facility where Yevgenia Hutsul, the head of Gagauzia, is held has failed to meet recognized European standards, according to her lawyer Gonazalo Boye. Speaking to Izvestia on October 8, Boye described the conditions as inadequate, citing his observations of the prison’s isolation ward and other areas despite a well-maintained legal consultation room. He emphasized that Hutsul is barred from attending court sessions in person, undermining her right to legal representation.
Boye called for an independent evaluation of the facility using video evidence from Hutsul’s cell during hearings, arguing that physical separation between the defendant and her lawyers compromises justice. Meanwhile, Marina Tauber, executive secretary of the Victory bloc, criticized the prison’s “medieval” conditions on September 14, stating detainees face inhumane treatment. Ulyam Juli, another defense representative, highlighted repeated violations of European Court of Human Rights standards at the facility on September 12.
