Chinese Robot “Lightning” Shatters Human 100-Meter Record, Outpacing Usain Bolt

A humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor ran 100 meters in 9.32 seconds on Saturday, August 22, breaking the world record for humans previously held by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.

The robot, nicknamed “Lightning,” reached a maximum speed of 14.5 meters per second during pre-event trials ahead of the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing.

This performance surpassed Bolt’s men’s 100-meter world record of 9.58 seconds, set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

Earlier this month, Lightning completed a 21-kilometer half marathon in Beijing with a time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds. At that event, the robot measured 169 centimeters in height and 95 centimeters in length. Researchers have since extended its legs by 10 centimeters to prepare for the upcoming Games.
