The deep waters of the Caribbean Sea remain one of Earth’s least explored regions. In summer 2026, Trinidad and Tobago conducted its first large-scale deep-sea expedition led by local scientists, completing a month-long mission off the nation’s coast. Researchers mapped previously unknown seabed areas, identifying dozens of potentially new animal species and sunlight-free ecosystems.
Despite advances in marine technology, exploring depths beyond recreational limits remains exceptionally challenging. Coastal environments are accessible to divers, but only specialized underwater vehicles and research vessels can operate at several kilometers’ depth. Such expeditions demand complex equipment, high financial costs, and multidisciplinary expertise—leaving vast ocean areas uncharted.
Trinidad and Tobago’s waters present unique exploration hurdles: approximately 93% of the nation’s marine territory lies beyond standard diving limits, with significant portions never studied by biologists. Yet the region’s geological structure supports diverse deep-sea lifeforms.
Diva Amon, the expedition’s chief researcher and marine biologist, stated: “Each new discovery—whether an ecosystem, species, or behavior—deepens our understanding of what’s at stake and strengthens our ability to be the true guardians of this largely invisible but critically important part of our country.”
The international team deployed the research vessel Falkor, mapping over 11,000 square kilometers of seabed and surveying roughly 13% of Trinidad and Tobago’s marine territory. They collected more than 700 biological samples and identified at least 20 potentially new species for science. Preliminary data indicates three discoveries may represent entirely new genera.
Notable findings include 25 cold seeps—sections where methane and hydrogen sulfide seep from sedimentary rocks. These ecosystems rely on chemosynthesis, enabling life without sunlight. Around such seeps, researchers observed dense clusters of mussels, tube worms, corals, fish, and invertebrates.
The expedition also uncovered an octopus species (possibly new to science), a starfish from the Porcellanasteridae family, a king crab, and a black swallowtail fish capable of swallowing prey larger than itself. Ghost sharks were observed near cold barnacles at depths exceeding 2,355 meters.
Scientists emphasized the extraordinary diversity within Trinidad and Tobago’s waters—spanning from shallow zones where lizard fish reside to depths over 3,961 meters. Many organisms remain in need of detailed analysis before classification confirmation. For the nation, this study marks the first comprehensive mapping of deep-sea ecosystems, providing critical insights for conservation efforts.
