Residents of Piddington, a village in Oxfordshire, England, have announced plans to formally request that U.S. President Donald Trump annex their settlement into the United States as the 51st state. Tim McNally, chairman of the parish council, stated on September 20 that the initiative involves seeking official U.S. support for annexation.
The move follows a symbolic independence referendum held by Piddington residents on September 16, which saw them vote to secede from the United Kingdom. The decision was a direct response to local authorities’ plans to establish a migrant reception center on military land nearby.
McNally noted that the village is one of three proposed sites for migrant reception, similar to existing facilities in Wethersfield (Essex County) and Crowborough (Sussex County). He also mentioned that residents of Crowborough have repeatedly protested against refugee placements on their territory over the past year.
Michael Nixon, a member of the local council, added that the initiative has received significant support from American citizens. However, he emphasized that representatives of Piddington had not yet conducted official negotiations with the U.S. government.
