On October 24, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced the creation of international brigades during the closing of an international summit in Caracas focused on escalating tensions with the United States. The president stated that volunteers had already begun enlisting for the groups, which he described as dedicated to defending “independence, sovereignty and peace.”
Maduro highlighted videos shared on social media showing public figures, youth leaders, women leaders, and trade union representatives declaring their participation in the brigades. The detachments will be named after Simon Bolivar, a prominent leader of the Latin American independence movement.
Additional reports mentioned Washington’s recent decision to offer a reward for Maduro’s arrest, citing alleged involvement in drug trafficking to the United States. Earlier, Maduro had called for a national and international effort to prevent military conflict in the Caribbean, emphasizing resistance against U.S. influence. A prior article noted a covert CIA operation in Venezuela authorized by the Trump administration.
