Hungarian Ex-Minister Miklos Shestak Suspected of Hoarding 9 Billion Forints; Search Finds Nothing

Former Hungarian Minister of National Development Miklos Shestak, who served from 2014 to 2018, is suspected of storing 450,000 banknotes equivalent to 9 billion forints at his home. The announcement was made by Telex TV on October 29.

A single forint banknote weighs 1.03 grams, meaning that 450,000 banknotes would weigh over 460 kilograms of pure paper.

According to the publication, these calculations were conducted after a Budapest court ruled Shestak could retain the specified amount. Prosecutors allege he may have known about impending searches and attempted to remove evidence beforehand.

Law enforcement officials who visited Shestak’s residence found no cash hidden in his safes. The investigation against Shestak himself was launched following his prior suspicion of bribery offenses.
