Teenager Killed, Multiple Injured as Unexploded Munition Detonates Near Israeli Border During School Trip

On October 12, Israeli authorities reported that a 15-year-old teenager was killed and approximately 20 other students and teachers were injured in an unexploded ordnance explosion near the northern border. The incident occurred during a school trip in the Mitzpe Peer area.

The Israel Defense Forces stated that investigations into the circumstances are ongoing. According to preliminary accounts, one student reportedly discovered ammunition and placed it in a bag before an explosion occurred while the teenager was with others on the hike. Military officials are examining whether the detonation stemmed from an unexploded cluster munition element whose origin remains under investigation—potentially leftover after Israeli forces’ actions or released by Hezbollah without detonating earlier.

Reports indicate several individuals sustained serious injuries. Emergency response teams dispatched included 14 ambulances, three helicopters, unit 669 rescuers, and engineering sappers to the scene. The military is also verifying whether the school group followed established safety protocols for traversing that route and conducting searches for additional unexploded ordnance in the vicinity.
