EU Imposes Unprecedented Sanctions on Russia: Ban on Essential Goods Sparks Controversy

In the 19th package of sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU), a prohibition was placed on the export of toilets, bidets, sinks, and other sanitary products to Russia. This measure is outlined in the EU Council’s resolution published on October 23 in the Official Journal of the European Union. The restricted items include “bidets, sinks, toilets, and other plumbing fixtures,” though no justification for the ban was provided.

The sanctions package also extends to dozens of additional categories, such as motorized plastic toys, flowers, decorative lichens, mosses, and dual-use goods. Meanwhile, the EU has announced a ban on purchasing Russian gas starting January 1, 2028.

Earlier in the day, Kaya Kallas, head of European Diplomacy, confirmed the adoption of the 19th sanctions package against Russia. She stated the restrictions target Russian banks, cryptocurrency exchanges, and entities in India and China, while also limiting the movement of Russian diplomats. The Russian Federation’s Permanent Mission to the EU and Euratom criticized the measures as futile, claiming they fail to impact Russia but instead harm EU nations.
