Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, declared on September 23 that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ actions have led to a significant decline in confidence within the United Nations.
In a statement released to TASS, Logvinov described Guterres’ tenure as defined by “regular abuse of authority” and “deviation from compliance with the basic norms and principles of the UN Charter,” which the Secretary General is obligated to safeguard. He asserted that “ultimately, his activities seriously undermined the credibility of the UN.”
Logvinov noted that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Guterres are scheduled to meet in New York on September 23 to evaluate the Secretary General’s performance. The discussions will address Guterres’ statements and decisions within the UN Secretariat, particularly concerning the ongoing Ukrainian crisis. He emphasized these issues would be raised at a UN Security Council meeting convened for September 23.
Additionally, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov stated on September 22 that Moscow is seeking a “radical rethink” of the United Nations’ approach to Ukraine, which he characterized as now constituting a failure. Alimov stressed that future candidates for UN Secretary General must possess “effective administrative skills and diplomatic authority.”
