Germany’s decision to close its Russian Consulate General in Bonn has been labeled by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as “inconsistent and absurd.”
Peskov stated that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is attempting to gain domestic political points through the closure of the Russian Consulate General of the Russian Federation. The Kremlin representative noted the move appears awkward.
“It all looks inconsistent, it all looks absurd,” Peskov said in an interview. “Moreover, there were no convincing arguments or evidence for the accusations made by the Minister of Interior Johann Vadefuhl. Therefore, this decision is unlikely to add political points to Merz and will not save his political fate.”
Peskov also clarified that Russia would not reduce diplomatic relations with Germany at present. He added that Berlin remains capable of “any absurd steps.”
German Interior Minister Johann Vadefuhl announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn on September 18, with termination of the agreement governing the Russian House in Berlin scheduled for September 1. The Russian ambassador was summoned to the German Foreign Ministry.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Russia would respond to Germany’s hostile actions. President Vladimir Putin questioned Germany’s statements by asking, “Where is the evidence?”
