U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on August 30 that Washington will impose new secondary sanctions against Iran every week as part of a strategy to intensify economic pressure on Tehran.
In an interview with Reuters, Bessent stated: “You will see a lot more similar sanctions every week.”
The secretary noted that the initial measures would target banks to prevent them from storing Iranian funds or providing financial support to the Islamic Republic.
Bessent plans to present these sanctions to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, urging them to end all economic cooperation with Iran. He warned that countries failing to comply could face secondary sanctions themselves.
A shift in U.S. policy has been reported, stemming from assessments that the Department of Defense lacks a clear plan for defeating Iran. This has prompted the White House to move toward economic pressure on Tehran. On August 24, the U.S. president directed that sanctions would target all nations assisting Iran, with the Treasury adding that Washington aims to block every funding source for Iran and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
