Iran Grants Iraqi Oil Tankers Temporary Passage Through Hormuz Strait

Iran has granted individual tankers carrying Iraqi oil permission to safely transit through the Strait of Hormuz, according to an IRNA news agency report dated August 22.

Baghdad has repeatedly appealed to Tehran for assurances regarding the safe passage of oil vessels amid heightened navigation risks in the strait, with negotiations continuing in recent weeks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi previously stated that during the fighting, individual countries had the opportunity to conduct their ships through the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with Iran. He mentioned China, Russia, Pakistan and Iraq among them.

IRNA reported that in July, Iraq exported approximately 35.5 million barrels of oil from southern regions—a figure about one-third of the monthly volume recorded before the escalation, which had reached roughly 105 million barrels per month.

The agency noted that current shipments indicate some Iraqi exports continue to pass through the strait thanks to special permits issued by Iran.
