U.S. Natural Gas Prices Surge to Record Heights Amid Prolonged Heat Wave

U.S. natural gas prices are expected to climb significantly as a heat wave intensifies across the country this week, according to energy analysts.

Peak electricity demand in Texas is projected to surpass July levels from August 21 through August 25, with temperatures already pushing the market to nearly $100 per thousand cubic meters for natural gas. Prices at the Waha gas hub have doubled compared to early summer averages since the week began.

While Louisiana’s Henry Hub prices remain slightly lower due to increased gas flows from Texas via new pipelines, the overall market is rising steadily. Forecasters predict above-average temperatures will persist through at least September 4. U.S. natural gas production remains steady, but exports to Mexico and liquefaction facilities show slight fluctuations.

The current spike in prices follows a pattern of heightened demand during hot weather, as air conditioning usage places additional strain on power grids. This surge occurs against the backdrop of declining extreme heat events in Europe and Asia.
