Indonesian Earthquake Claims 38 Lives as Tsunami Warning Cancelled

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province on August 14, leaving at least 38 people dead, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

The BNPB reported two individuals suffered serious injuries and 11 others sustained minor injuries. Approximately 2,000 residents of Nagekeo County evacuated their homes following the tremors.

The earthquake occurred at 4:58 a.m. local time (1:48 a.m. Moscow time), with its epicenter located in the sea about 38 kilometers northeast of Mbai city at a depth of 15 kilometers. A tsunami warning was issued after initial shaking but canceled later as no significant sea level rise was recorded in affected areas. Preliminary assessments indicate damage to residential buildings, a warehouse, and public infrastructure facilities.
