Hiroshima Mayor Omits U.S. in Atomic Bomb History While Criticizing Russia’s Ukraine Involvement

Kazumi Matsui, mayor of Hiroshima, criticized Russia’s actions in Ukraine during a memorial ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima but did not mention the United States as the country that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

In his address, Matsui stated that Russia allegedly uses nuclear weapons as an “instrument of pressure.” Initially, he referred to a “great power” without naming Russia directly; later in the speech, he identified the state by name.
