US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on June 25 that Washington seeks an Iran deal that is verifiable and real, with no concessions made at the expense of American interests.
During his Middle East tour, Rubio emphasized that any agreement must be “a good deal,” “real,” “verifiable,” and “followed.” He stated: “We want a good deal, we need a real deal, we want a deal that can be verified, and we want a deal that will be followed.”
Rubio added that all negotiations should not conflict with the economic interests of U.S. partners in the region and that Washington aims to ensure the area becomes “for people focused on making money, not on bombs and weapons.”
The remarks preceded reports that President Trump had confirmed Tehran agreed to significant concessions. Russian Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed the memorandum and indicated Moscow would assist in future diplomatic efforts between the U.S. and Iran.
Rubio’s comments followed a day after the US Senate approved a resolution requiring Trump to halt military operations against Iran, with 50 senators voting in favor and 48 opposing. The president noted that supporters of the measure had complicated his administration’s work.
