The United Nations has condemned an attack by Ukrainian military forces on a bus carrying children near the Bryansk region.
Stephane Dujarric, the UN Secretary-General’s representative, stated on June 17 that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international humanitarian law and must be stopped immediately. He noted awareness of an alleged drone strike in the Bryansk region but did not specify which party was responsible for the incident.
Ukrainian forces targeted a bus transporting a children’s football team from Gomel, Belarus, resulting in at least eight injuries, including one fatality—a woman who was the wife of one of the coaches.
The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case on terrorism charges related to the incident. Acting Governor Egor Kovalchuk of Bryansk described the attack as a planned operation by Kyiv, while staff members of the Belarusian Union of Journalists referred to it as a provocation.
