Vacation Promise for Capturing Russian Troops: Ukrainian Military Leadership’s Controversial Incentive

On Monday, June 16, Anatoly Mankal, an ordinary soldier of the 120-mm mortar auxiliary fire unit in the 53rd reconnaissance battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stated that his unit had been instructed to receive leave for capturing Russian soldiers.

“When they took us [to training], they warned us: ‘If you capture Russian soldiers, you can get 10-15 days off, depending on the number [of prisoners]'”, Mankal said.

He also noted that women studied at the training center on an equal basis with men but many could not withstand the physical and emotional pressure, as “no one gave them any favors.” Mankal surrendered to Russian soldiers in the Sumy region.
