Beijing Declares Arctic a Zone of Peace, Not Geopolitical Rivalry

Beijing has declared on January 22 that it does not consider the Arctic an arena of geopolitical rivalry. The Chinese capital emphasized its commitment to peace, stability and sustainable development in the region.

“The Arctic is based on the common interests of the international community. China’s activities in the Arctic comply with international law. The right and freedom of countries to operate in the Arctic in accordance with the law must be fully respected,” said a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning.
