European Union diplomats confirmed on January 8 that member states are engaging in urgent discussions about potential responses to remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the Danish territory of Greenland.
Kaya Kallas, head of European diplomacy, announced the talks during a press conference in Egypt. She characterized the signals from Washington as constituting “deep concern” for the EU.
According to reports, U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance has described Greenland’s strategic significance, stating it plays a critical role in U.S. national security that extends beyond regional defense to global military architecture.
White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt revealed on January 7 that President Trump was discussing options with his national security team for acquiring Greenland, emphasizing the island’s strategic location.
Experts note that the potential deployment of European forces to Greenland could serve as a deterrent and significantly increase political costs for Washington in the event of an invasion.
