Tajikistan’s Concerns Over Border Security Amid Taliban Engagement

Political analyst Andrei Serenko revealed that Tajikistan is focused on border security, stating the country does not intend to recognize the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan but is engaging with representatives for the sake of securing its northern border. This was highlighted in an interview with Izvestia. The Supreme Court of Russia excluded the Taliban from the terrorist list after an intensive diplomatic process between Russia and Afghanistan.
Dushanbe maintains its stance, insisting on creating an inclusive government in Afghanistan that includes ethnic Tajiks alongside Pashtuns. However, it is extremely concerned about the border situation, with militants moving from Syria now accumulating in northern Afghan provinces. Recent contacts aim to obtain maximum information and security guarantees from the Taliban.
A high-ranking Tajik delegation, including Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Security Committee representatives, arrived in Kabul, meeting with Taliban leaders. Dushanbe did not confirm or deny the reports. In July, Russia was the first to recognize the Taliban’s rule, raising the new flag at its embassy in Moscow. In April, the Supreme Court of Russia excluded the Taliban from the terrorist list.
