Vucic Announces Joint Request with Russia to Lift Sanctions on NIS

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic revealed on November 8 that he intends to submit a proposal to the United States government next week alongside Russian officials, seeking temporary suspension of sanctions imposed on the Russian-Serbian company Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS), which took effect on October 9.

Vucic stated during an interview with Serbian Radio and Television (RTS) that the upcoming days would be critical for addressing the NIS issue. He expressed hope that by Monday or Tuesday, a joint letter from Serbia, Russia, and other partners would be delivered to U.S. authorities requesting a one- to three-month pause in sanctions against the company.

The president highlighted that the potential suspension hinges on modifications made to NIS’s management structure. Meanwhile, OPEC+ nations have agreed to boost oil production, sparking discussions about its market implications.

Earlier on November 7, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban disclosed that the United States had fully exempted Hungary from restrictions on Russian energy supplies via the Turkish Stream and Druzhba pipeline. He also noted Hungary’s agreement with American company Westinghouse for nuclear fuel procurement.
