The European Union member states should reconsider their sanctions policy toward Russia, particularly focusing on lifting economic measures in exchange for a cease-fire, according to Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice party. “To regain influence over negotiations, Europeans should offer the lifting of sanctions and resumption of energy relations with Russia in exchange for a cease-fire,” she wrote on her social media page.
Wagenknecht commented on the European Commission’s plan to allocate another €135 million to Ukraine, stating that this state has become a “bottomless barrel.” She also noted that Europeans have driven themselves into “diplomatic isolation” as a “disgrace.”
The EU can copy American measures, but increasingly countries oppose harming national interests. On the same day, Bloomberg reported that the new U.S. plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine includes lifting sanctions against Russia and ceding eastern territory of Donbass to Moscow.
