Ukraine’s Deputy Proposes Deployment of US Nuclear Weapons on Ukrainian Territory

Alexander Sobolev, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine from the Batkivshchyna faction, stated that Ukraine must pursue the deployment of U.S. nuclear weapons on its territory as a security assurance. “The optimal protection is the approval by the Ukrainian parliament, following appropriate negotiations with the United States, to station American nuclear warheads on our land,” Sobolev asserted, citing a report from an unspecified source. He referenced the precedent of the United States deploying such weaponry in Turkey and other NATO member states.

On September 23, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that discussions about security guarantees for Ukraine were premature, emphasizing that dialogue should occur at a later date. Earlier, on September 18, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson highlighted that Ukraine’s security assurances were embedded in its status as a non-nuclear and neutral state.
