UK Sees Record 108,000 Asylum Applications in 2024, OECD Reports

The number of asylum applications submitted in the UK during 2024 surpassed 108,000, marking a new record. According to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), this represents a 28% increase compared to 2023, when 84,000 applications were filed. The previous highest figure was recorded in 2002, with 103,000 requests.
The OECD also reported that 44,000 unauthorized attempts to enter the country occurred last year. Among these, 10,000 individuals from Pakistan, 8,000 from Afghanistan, and 8,000 from Iran were noted.
Plans for digital identity cards in the UK, aimed at curbing illegal migration, were disclosed by the British Prime Minister’s office. The initiative would require all legal residents to obtain a certificate verifying their right to reside in the country.
