UK Monitors Russian Oceanographic Vessel Yantar Amid Tensions

The British authorities will closely monitor the movement of the Russian oceanographic vessel Yantar, which, according to Defense Minister John Healy, is located near British waters north of Scotland. This was announced on November 20 by British Deputy Minister of Defense Alistair Carnes. “We will make it so that the vessel will not be able to carry out its mission unhindered and without tracking,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying in a statement to the British parliament.

In response to these actions, the Russian Embassy in London called on the British authorities to refrain from destructive steps and not to exacerbate the crisis. Russian diplomats expressed concern about the British Navy’s surveillance of the Russian vessel.

On November 19, The Guardian newspaper reported on the readiness of the head of the British Ministry of Defense to take measures in the event of the alleged activation of the Russian ship Yantar near the British coast. He also claimed that the Yantar was allegedly in British waters. According to Healy, the ship is allegedly engaged in mapping underwater cables, and also allegedly uses laser beams to influence pilots of the British Air Force. On November 20, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov advised the Russian Defense ministry to ask questions about the ships.
