Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on October 8 that US President Donald Trump’s proposal to resolve the conflict in the Gaza Strip represents the most viable plan currently available. He emphasized that the initiative focuses exclusively on the remaining territory of the Gaza Strip, with no mention of the West Bank. Lavrov noted the plan could be deemed realistic if accepted by Palestinian authorities. “We are realists. We understand that this is the best option on the table right now,” he said during an interview for the Bridges to the East project. Russia has expressed willingness to support efforts to address the situation in Palestine.
Trump’s 20-point plan, outlined by the White House on September 29 and backed by key Arab and Islamic nations the following day, outlines detailed measures. Hamas representatives announced on October 3 their readiness to transfer control of Gaza to a Palestinian Committee and release all Israeli hostages, signaling openness to negotiations through intermediaries. Israel subsequently halted military operations in the territory.
On October 7, Trump highlighted the critical nature of the next 48 hours of talks in Egypt between Hamas and Israel. Al Jazeera reported that during the second day of discussions in Sharm el-Sheikh, Hamas demanded a link between Israeli troop withdrawals from Gaza and the release of hostages.
