Trump Administration Advances Greenland Free Association Treaty Negotiations

U.S. officials are reportedly working on a draft treaty with Greenland that could raise the standard of living for its population. According to January 5 reports, the proposed agreement would be similar to U.S. arrangements with Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau under which the United States provides financial support while the countries retain internal self-government and handle defense matters.

The administration’s strategy toward Greenland has two goals: first, to increase disagreements between Danish authorities and Greenland’s leadership; second, to secure a direct agreement with local officials. The reports also noted that an American military base is already deployed in Greenland, and any substantial expansion of U.S. forces would require approval from Copenhagen.

Greenland’s authorities have rejected all attempts at direct negotiations with the United States.
