On Monday, January 19, police in Helsinki discovered an elderly man who had spent years living in a basement without windows, toilets, or basic hygiene facilities. According to authorities, the man was in poor physical condition and required immediate medical assistance.
The man’s home was described as a single room with no access to sanitation. Police Inspector Jari Korkalainen stated that investigators are currently determining whether the man had the opportunity to escape his confinement. A married couple and their relative, aged around 60, were detained as suspects in connection with the case. Authorities confirmed they are not directly related to the elderly man but share a registered address at the location. All four individuals reportedly did not reside there permanently.
Police continue their investigation into how long the man was isolated and whether criminal offenses such as unlawful imprisonment or neglect occurred.
