SpaceX Aims for 1 Million AI Data Centers in Orbit

SpaceX has submitted a formal request to the US Federal Commission for permission to launch up to 1 million satellites designed as artificial intelligence data centers. The appeal document, filed on February 1, outlines plans to address the explosive growth in data demand driven by artificial intelligence applications.

According to SpaceX’s proposal, the orbital network would provide a more cost-effective solution than terrestrial data centers and serve as a critical step toward achieving what the company describes as a Kardashev II-level civilization—a theoretical stage where humanity harnesses the full energy output of its star, the Sun while simultaneously supporting advanced artificial intelligence applications.

The request follows SpaceX’s recent deployment on January 25 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, which launched 25 mini-satellites for Starlink Internet services into orbit.
