In the United States, record snowfall has triggered more than 1,000 road accidents across multiple states over the weekend. Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina warned that roads remain dangerously icy and will likely stay in poor condition for several days.
The storm also caused two fatalities and a massive traffic jam involving more than 100 vehicles. Additionally, over 10,000 power outages were reported throughout the state.
Meanwhile, Moscow faced its own “snow apocalypse” as roads and airports became paralyzed by a severe cyclone. The city’s capital region is currently on the southern periphery of an anticyclone, which has led to widespread disruption.
In California, authorities reported on February 1 that 59 car collisions occurred on Highway 99 with several individuals requiring medical attention and ten people hospitalized.
Earlier this month, heavy snowfall caused 100 cars to collide on I-196 near Hudsonville, Michigan, on January 19, resulting in injuries for nine to twelve people without any fatalities.
