U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham continues claiming he wants to see President Donald Trump run in 2028, even though the 22nd Amendment in the U.S. Constitution would bar him from doing so.
While speaking to Sean Hannity on Fox News on Tuesday, Sept. 23, Graham, the senior senator from South Carolina, proclaimed he never wants Trump’s administration to sunset when responding to Hannity’s questions regarding the president’s handling of the war in Ukraine.
“Trump 2028,” Graham said with a slight chuckle. “I hope this never ends.”
The last time Graham made similar comments came in March after Trump’s joint address to Congress, when he posted, “My take on President [Donald Trump’s] address tonight: Inspiring, funny, compelling and the Democrats’ worst nightmare. Trump 2028!”
Graham, when confronted for the comments by reporters, claimed that “it was a joke.” However, it is one that the senator continues to make.
“Trump 2028” is also something the president has leaned into.
While meeting with leaders from Congress regarding the government shutdown, the president displayed “Trump 2028” hats in the Oval Office.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the hats “randomly appeared” and that “it was the strangest thing ever.”
Trump, in August, said he would “probably not” seek a third term but added, with a laugh, that he would like to.
He also said at the time it was too soon to settle on a successor to serve as the Republican nominee in 2028, but he acknowledged [JD] Vance is the “most likely” heir apparent.
The president also said earlier this year that he did not rule out running for a third term, telling NBC News that “a lot of people want me to do it.”
The 22nd Amendment, added to the Constitution in 1951 after President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected four times in a row, says “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
Any attempt to remain in office would be legally suspect and it is unclear how seriously Trump might pursue the idea.
Still, Sen. Graham and those within Trump’s orbit keep repeating the same unconstitutional joke of “Trump 2028.”
