Russia Warns U.S. Economic Pressure on Cuba is a Radical Escalation

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the United States’ escalating economic measures against Cuba, describing them as a “radical continuation” of Washington’s strategy designed to isolate the island nation through economic strangulation. The statement was issued by Maria Zakharova, the ministry’s official representative, on January 31.

Zakharova characterized U.S. actions as a “very radical relapse” in efforts to apply maximum pressure on Cuba, with explicit intent to enforce economic isolation. She emphasized that Moscow categorically opposes unilateral sanctions imposed by states that circumvent United Nations resolutions and international law.

The ministry also affirmed confidence that Cuba will maintain robust foreign economic relations despite external challenges.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez stated on January 30 that U.S. actions against Cuba constitute an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to global security, a claim he described as being supported by the international community.

Additionally, the White House published on January 29 a presidential decree by Donald Trump establishing a national emergency and imposing duties on goods from countries supplying oil to Cuba. The order specifies that these measures are intended to address the declared “national emergency.”

The United States has also reportedly discussed options for regime change in Cuba, including potential blockades of oil imports.
