Russia Condemns Japan’s Military Exercises Near Far East Borders

Japan’s military activities near Russia’s Far Eastern borders have raised security concerns, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry on October 31. The ministry highlighted the Joint Exercise 2025, which involved the entire Japanese archipelago, including Hokkaido Island, a region close to Russia.

The Russian side expressed alarm over the continued presence of the Typhon ground-based missile system in Japan as part of the Japanese-American Resolute Dragon 25 exercises (September 11–25). The ministry emphasized that it reserves the right to take “necessary measures” to safeguard its security.

Despite tensions, bilateral tourism between Russia and Japan has seen a steady increase for two consecutive years. Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that renewed dialogue with Tokyo hinges on Japan abandoning its “anti-Russian policy,” noting that recent statements from Japanese leaders failed to address this issue.
