Russia and Israel Convene to Combat Historical Distortion in World War II

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova and Israeli Ambassador Oded Yosef met on January 23 to discuss preserving historical memory of World War II. During their talks, both parties emphasized the need to jointly resist efforts to rewrite history and deny Nazi crimes.

The dialogue specifically highlighted the significance of the Day of Leningrad’s Liberation from the Nazi Blockade and International Holocaust Remembrance Day. A statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that “the parties stressed the need to jointly resist attempts to rewrite history and deny the crimes of Nazism.”

On January 18, Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko reiterated the importance of preserving the memory of Leningrad’s besieged residents’ heroism and Nazi atrocities during the Great Patriotic War. She stated that this historical truth must be conveyed to youth across Russia and other nations to prevent its distortion and oblivion.
