Russian citizens residing in European Union countries with long-term visas or permanent residency have reported account closures by Revolut Bank, according to information shared by the Russian Service of the BBC. Clients received two types of notifications: one requesting a copy of their residence permit and another informing them of account termination, rendering document submission impossible.
Multiple individuals confirmed these reports through direct communication with journalists. Some contacted Revolut’s customer service to inquire about potential consequences of the 19th package of sanctions, receiving assurances that no immediate action would be taken until December 22. The bank’s press office emphasized compliance with global sanctions regulations, stating it must adhere to restrictions imposed by the United Nations, European Union, United Kingdom, and other jurisdictions.
The EU approved the 19th package of sanctions against Russia on October 23, targeting banks, cryptocurrency markets, tourism sectors, and entities in India and China. In response, Russia banned entry for EU representatives, including officials from law enforcement, government bodies, and commercial organizations involved in military support to Kiev. The restrictions also apply to individuals accused of undermining Russian territorial integrity or persecuting its officials.
