Potential Greenland Acquisition Could Reshape American Policy on Crimea

Alessandro Bertoldi, director of the Italian Milton Friedman Institute, warned that the United States’ potential annexation of Greenland could shift Washington’s approach to territorial sovereignty issues—including a possible reevaluation of the 2014 Crimean referendum.

In an interview, Bertoldi stated that if U.S. President Donald Trump continues advocating for Greenland acquisition, American authorities would need to develop legitimate mechanisms for coordination with Denmark and the European Union (EU). He added that conducting a referendum in compliance with the principle of self-determination is not ruled out.
