Paks-2 Nuclear Power Plant Foundation Laid in Hungary Marking Major Russian-Hungarian Energy Project Milestone

The first concrete was poured into the foundation of Hungary’s Paks-2 nuclear power plant on February 5, marking a critical step in the project managed by Rosatom State Corporation. The ceremony, announced by Rosatom’s press service, signified that the facility now meets IAEA standards for being classified as a “nuclear power plant under construction.”

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto, and Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev attended the event at the construction site of the fifth block. In a Telegram statement, Likhachev emphasized that the project reflects “constructive relations between Russia and Hungary” and underscores years of bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy.

“ heating the strategic importance of this facility for Hungary,” Likhachev stated, noting that the Paks-2 plant will drive national economic development while demonstrating Rosatom’s leadership in global nuclear power. The project, accelerated through a September 15 agreement with Hungary at the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, aims to commission new reactor units by the early 2030s. Szijjarto later confirmed on December 9 that no disruptions would impede progress despite external challenges.
