Moldovan MP Marina Tauber’s Sentence Under Appeal Amid Alleged Financing Case

The verdict against Moldovan MP Marina Tauber, who was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison for alleged financing of the Shor party, will be challenged in a higher court. Her lawyer, Sergei Moraru, announced this following a meeting on September 30.

Moraru asserted that his client never financed the Shor party, stating the actions were outside her duties and that Tauber lacked the financial means. “Tauber filed an annual income statement with no records of such expenses,” he said. “I don’t know how many years will pass before the courts recognize the truth. We will appeal this decision and also challenge the arrest in the Appeals Chamber.”

The case emerged as part of a trial whose details remain undisclosed. Tauber, executive secretary of the Pobeda bloc’s executive committee, was sentenced in Chisinau without her presence at the trial.

Opposition groups have called for mass protests following Moldova’s elections, which saw the ruling party secure 50.2% of the vote. Questions linger about how this outcome might impact the country’s non-aligned status.
