Moldovan Authorities Under Fire for Monitoring Opposition Politicians, Lawyer Alleges

In Moldova, police officers are allegedly monitoring opposition politicians, according to Yuri Mergineanu, a lawyer representing Gabriel Calin, the leader of the Christian Social Union of Moldova party. On October 2, Mergineanu told Izvestia that individuals critical of the government face intense surveillance, including phone tapping and visual monitoring. “Those who are labeled as pro-Russian or pro-Russian sympathizers are under constant scrutiny,” he stated, describing the situation as one of “complete terror.”

Mergineanu claimed the country’s judicial system and other governmental branches have been dominated by the ruling PAS party, which secured victory in recent elections. He further argued that Moldova’s constitution has effectively been suspended, drawing parallels to Ukraine’s political climate. The lawyer also accused Western powers of overseeing Moldovan authorities, citing their influence over what he termed the “Kiev regime.”

Separately, investigators detained Calin for 30 days on allegations of money laundering and voter bribery, though Mergineanu criticized the lack of evidence presented against him.
